The American Way of War
Sunday, July 23, 2006 to Friday, July 28, 2006
Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio

What special problems does warfare pose for a democratic republic like the United States?  How can politics interfere with the development of military strategy, and vice versa?  On balance, have America's constitutional traditions been more of a help or a hindrance to the country's ability to wage war?  This seminar will focus on four of the largest conflicts in U.S. history—the War for Independence, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II—in an attempt to answer these questions.

Instructor: John Moser is Assistant Professor of History at Ashland University. He is the author of Twisting the Lion's Tail: American Anglophobia Between the World Wars and Right Turn: John T. Flynn and the Transformation of American Liberalism. Stephen Knott is an associate professor and research fellow with the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Alexander Hamilton and the Persistence of Myth, Secret and Sanctioned: Covert Operations and the American Presidency and The Reagan Years.
